Russians usually have a first, or given name, a patronymic, and a last or family name. The patronymic is derived from the fathers given name with an ending, usually of "-ovich" to indicate "son of", or "-ovna" to indicate "daughter of."
The son of Alexander (Александр)
would have the patronymic of Aleksandrovich (Александрович).
Alexander's daughter would have the patronymic Aleksandrovna (Александровна).
