Maria Montessori was the first woman doctor in Italy.
She was a psychiatrist.
When she was born, girls could not go to public schools.
Women could not have their own bank accounts.
Women could not own property.
Women could not vote.
Can you imagine that?
Maria was 7 when Italy allowed girls to go to school.
When World War II began, Montessori escaped to India.
In India, she worked for peace.
She earned two Nobel Peace Prize nominations.
Maria wanted to help children to learn.
In 1906, Maria started a school for poor children.
It was called "Casa dei Bambini," or Children's House.
She created many good ways for children to learn.
Her way of teaching children is popular all over the world.
Maria Montessori died on May 6, 1952.
