| A butterfly lays her eggs on leaves or plants. | ||
| She lays a lot of very little eggs. | ||
| Not all of the eggs will hatch and become butterflies. | ||
| When the egg hatches it is called a larva or caterpillar. | ||
| The first thing the caterpillar does is eat the leaf or plant that the egg was on. | ||
| The caterpillar eats, and eats, and eats! | ||
| It gets bigger and bigger! | ||
| It sheds its skin 4 or 5 times as it grows. | ||
| It can grow to 100 times the size of the egg. | ||
| When the caterpillar stops growing it is a pupa. | ||
| The pupa is also called a chrysalis. | ||
| The pupa usually hangs from the bottom of a leaf. | ||
| Inside the pupa many changes take place. | ||
| The legs, wings and eyes start to form. | ||
| Finally, the pupa changes into a butterfly. | ||
| A caterpillar has short legs, short antennae, and tiny eyes. | ||
| The butterfly has long legs, long antennae, and compound eyes. | ||
| Best of all, a butterfly has wings and can fly! | ||
